Trainer Profile

CHRIS WALLER

A hit and run raid on Sydney from his former home of Foxton in New Zealand in 1998 proved the forerunner to Kiwi horseman Chris Waller making a fulltime move to Australia.

Chris only brought one horse to Sydney for his first Sydney attack – Party Belle – and they went home a winner. Following that Chris made more frequent hit and run trips to Sydney where he stayed at Rosehill before eventually making the move permanent.

Having started with a small team of four horses when granted stables at Rosehill, Chris now has 100 thoroughbreds in full work and the team is of the highest quality.

In the autumn of 2008 Waller prepared his first Group 1 winner when Triple Honour rocketed to victory in the Doncaster Handicap. That breakthrough win followed a nose second to star galloper Weekend Hussler in the Randwick Guineas.

Since then Chris has experienced many big race wins including the 2010 Group 1 Doncaster Handicap with Rangirangdoo, The 2010 Group 1 George Ryder Stakes and Manikato Stakes with Danleigh, The 2010 Group 1 Doomben Cup with Metal Bender and the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes with Pressday, as well as 4 group 1 wins in 2011 with Rangirangdoo taking out the George Ryder Stakes, Danleigh winning the 2011 Chipping Norton Stakes, My Kingdom of Fife winning the 2011 Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Stand to Gain victorious in the 2011 Sydney Cup.

Chris is a regular at the major carnivals around Australia and is an active buyer at Australasian yearling sales as well as venturing to the UK to purchase tried horses.

Chris began his career with horses back in Foxton with trainer Paddy Busuttin. He was travelling Foreman for Busuttin and had an association with stable veteran Castletown which ran third in the 1992 Melbourne Cup behind Subzero. Chris took over Busuttin's Foxton stables when the Trainer took up a Singapore training contract.

Now firmly entrenched at the top of the Sydney Trainers' premiership, Chris is grateful for the support of loyal stable clients that he has trained for since his arrival at Rosehill.

ABOUT CHRIS WALLER RACING

The rise to the top of the Sydney Trainers' ranks has by no means been an overnight success story for Chris Waller Racing.

"Like anything, you are only as good as the staff you build up around you," explained Waller.

"Seasons 10/11 was by our best by far but it has been the infrastructure put in place leading up to those years that have proved crucial."

At the end of the 10/11 racing season Chris Waller Racing has enjoyed its most successful season ever with 117 Metropolitan winners to take out the Sydney metropolitan and NSW trainers premierships.

With so many runners, Chris Waller Racing does the utmost best to secure the best jockeys for their clients on race day. Leading jockey Hugh Bowman rides the bulk of our runners along with Glyn Schofield and Nash Rawiller. We also use Kerrin McEvoy and Corey Brown when available.

Bob Ingham, who was formerly Australia's biggest owner before selling his Woodlands Stud racing and breeding operation to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Darley in early 2008,purchased more than 20 yearlings at the 2008 Sydney Easter Yearling Sales. Following on from then 2011 was another big year with close to 40 yearling purchases at all major sales including Magic Millions, Karaka and the Inglis Easter sale.

"It is a privilege to train for Mr Ingham and I am also extremely thankful to all my other owners in the stable who have helped us to become what we are today," said Waller.

"Having a horse in training in the city is a costly exercise, up to $35,000 a year, but we are here to make it profitable.

"The infrastructure we have in place now means we have become quite labour intensive in order to look after people's investments.

"We have a foreperson for each 20 horse block and they have six staff working under them as well as track riders.

"I believe with this infrastructure we can continue to grow without losing the quality and hands on approach that we have become accustomed to."

TRAINING FACILITIES

The Rosehill Gardens racecourse is not only a superior racing venue but benchmark training establishment.

Based only 20km from the Sydney CBD the training centre we have the benefit of a variety of training tracks and facilities to ensure our horse's are the number one priority.Based on the track Rosehill has available five separate tracks for work including the turf course proper (2048m x 30m) which can be used weekly for galloping. We also have access to an additional turf training track (1538m x 27m) which is also used for barrier trials as well gallops daily. Further to this we use a sand track (1712m x 7m), cinders track (1357m x 7m) plus a pro ride track (1436m x 7m) used for work under all weather conditions.

Rosehill complements the training infrastructure with scheduled weekly jump outs, fortnightly barrier trials and a full time maintenance team employed both on course and around the stables.

In addition to this CWR also has access to a modern 50 metre swimming pool maintained by the Australian Turf Club which is used in both morning and afternoon.

Further to this Chris Waller Racing also owns a new high-tech horse treadmill incorporating programs for horses at various stages of their preparation.

From this it can be seen why Chris Waller Racing maintains the benchmark position in horse training with some of the most comprehensive training facilities in Australia.

STABLE FACILITIES

Chris Waller Racing operates out of one of the most modern stabling complexes in the Sydney metropolitan area. Chris Waller Racing utilizes one sole centre at Rosehill Gardens with all staff based at the Western Sydney headquarters.

Each barn consists of 20 Boxes in a modern and spacious setup promoting a clean and healthy living environment. For the cooler weather each barn is fitted with rollaway blinds used to block the elements from the exterior in all seasons. The boxes are bedded with fresh shavings or straw dependent on requirements which are all located on site.

Each barn is also fitted with an exceptionally designed tack room housing all of the necessary gear and equipment for horses in training. We also have a purpose built feed room which houses two large mixers used to prepare feeds for each individual horse as per the specially designed diet created by Chris.

Further to this we also employ a full time farrier who is afforded a full work shop located within the stabling and training complex at Rosehill. The stables are also fitted with office's on the second level which are used by management staff.

The stables are afforded luxuries such as three ten berth walkers, eight hosing bays, six sand rolls and scales to record each horse's weight. In addition we have access to a state of the art swimming pool and horse treadmill.
