TRAINER: BJORN BAKER
Bjorn Baker worked for his father, New Zealand record-holding trainer Murray Baker, from a young age before taking a different route, graduating with a Bachelor Of Pharmacy in 1999 from Otago University.
After spending eight years in that profession the lure of horse-racing was too much and with the dream of being a trainer Baker spent time overseas working with trainers in Ireland and America honing and learning his craft.
In 2007, Baker joined the family business and in 2008 during his first foray to Australia he accompanied Nom Du Jeu on a highly successful autumn campaign winning the Group I Australian Derby at Randwick.
At the start of the 2008/09 season, he went into partnership with his father Murray and a few years later branched out and set up his own stable at Warwick Farm.
Baker had initial success with stayers however when two-year-old Unencumbered won the 2014 Magic Millions at the Gold Coast, it proved Baker wasn’t a one-trick pony.
Bjorn Baker’s first major winner was Cantonese in 2012 and he joined the Group 1 club in his own right in 2016 when Music Magnate won the Doomben 10,000.
